Using trauma-informed educational practices in first-year university programming: Preventing psychological harm
Public DepositedThe majority of college-aged students today are part of Generation Z (Gen Z) and are enrolling at colleges and universities now through 2034. Research indicates a need to address negative mental and emotional health for this generation due to recent social and political events plaguing the United States. As students enter college settings, higher education professionals need to be equipped to meet student’s unique mental and emotional needs. Teaching Trauma-Informed Educational Practices (TIEP) provides intentional knowledge and skills for student leaders, faculty, and students affairs practitioners to be integrated into their practices with students in and out of the classroom. This study aimed to address the lack of readiness for higher education professionals to address students mental and emotional concerns through a training and development class for current students who will serve in a leadership capacity during a first-year student summer program called Cat Camp. The purpose of Cat Camp is to allow incoming students to meet one another before classes begin, provide an opportunity for these students to connect with the campus and community, and provide knowledge and skills to assist in their transition to WCU. As these student leaders welcome new students to WCU, it is important for them to do so safely and appropriately in order to create a psychologically safe environment for all students. Thus, the training and development class incorporated TIEP for the student leaders to ensure a mentally safe and positive transition for the incoming students. Improvement Science was the framework implemented for this improvement initiative and incorporated opportunities to identity a problem, conduct a root cause analysis, and create an improvement initiative to help prevent and/or mitigate the identified problem.
